The origins of festivals

A festival is an event that is normally put on by a local community, which centers on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community.

Among many religions, a feast is a set of celebrations in honour of God or gods. A feast and a festival are historically interchangeable. However, the term "feast" has also entered common secularparlance as a synonym for any large or elaborate meal. When used as in the meaning of a festival, most often refers to a religious festivals rather than a film or art festival.

Samba in Cambridge research repor

Samba in Cambridge research report

Acro Iris Samba

There costumes are bright so they immediately  draw your attention, each jumper and t-shirt has the same logo printed on it which gives it a sense of group identity. The people performing the samba look like there really enjoying  themselves,  it’s very lively there not just all stood still, there all  dancing and getting into the performance. They have a woman at the front with a whistle to count everyone in and keep the beat going. By doing it in town , there are catching people attention and getting them involved in the performance.

Thudbox – Bal A

The group don’t have any pacific clothing on, giving them no sense of group identity.  The group is much smaller than the other samba group and they are performing on stage rather than out on the street like the other group. They don’t have anyone counting them in,  they seem very together and you can tell they know what they’re doing on stage. The lights look really good and go really well with the performance changing with the different beats.

here are some pictures of the petitions that i did on the day
i got 58 people to sign my petition in total.

20 out the the 58 people i asked were girls , the rest were boys

campaign research

Today we had secretary of the cambridge and districts trades union, (Tom Woodcock) come to talk to us about the campaigns he has been involved in and that strategies you need to have to run a campaign. He spoke to us about research and told us we have to understand our subject, make sure we address the right audience and get publicity for our campaign. e.g setting up a petition creating a website, badges, leaflets, posters etc.

He spoke about a particular petition he was involved in which was to support the postal dispute

Campaign ideas

1 - Something that would make my on life better:
A job would make my life better as it would mean i would have more money and independence

2 - Something that would make other peoples lives better:
Free bus fair for for all students in full time education
this would appeal to 16-19 year olds as there are a great number of students who have to use the buses daily to get to and from college and can become quite costly.

3 - Something that would make someone smile:
Free cinema tickets for everyone on a wednesday
this would appeal to 16-19 year olds because going to the cinema is something that people of this age group do a lot.

Banksy is a quasi-anonymous, bristol based, graffiti artist with an international reputation.
i chose this picture because i like how Banksy has made the white wall look like a white sheet, and the picture is mainly black and white with just skin color on the lady and i think this works well.

Thursday, 22 October 2009

the question i asked was 'would you like to make clothes cheaper?'
i chose the question i did , because it is something i would like myself.
i think the question appealed to most of the class , because it is something that most people would want, as everyone has to but clothes.

I used the custom shape tool to get the arrows , i used these arrows instead of normal arrows, because they are more interesting to look at.
i made them green because it draws your attention.

History of the t-shirt

The T-shirt evolved from undergarments used in the 19th century, through cutting the one-piece "union suit" underwear into separate top and bottom garments, with the top long enough to tuck under the waistband of the bottoms. T-shirts, with and without buttons, were adopted by miners and stevedores during the late 1800's as a convenient covering for hot environments.

T-shirts, as a slip on garment without buttons, originally became popular in the United States when they were issued by the U.S. Navy during or following the Spanish American War. These were a crew-necked, short-sleeved, white cotton undershirt to be worn under a uniform. It became common for sailors and Marines in work parties, the early submarines, and tropical climates to remove their uniform "jacket," wearing (and soiling) only the undershirt. It is possible that the Navy uniform boards first discovered the T-shirt by watching dock crews.

Named the T-shirt due to the shape of the garment's outline, they soon became popular as a bottom layer of clothing for workers in various industries, including agriculture. The T-shirt was easily fitted, easily cleaned, and inexpensive, and for this reason, it became the shirt of choice for young boys (perhaps more the choice of their mothers than of the boys themselves). Boy's shirts were made in various colors and patterns, and became so ubiquitous that cartoon character Charlie Brown rarely was seen without his T-shirt with distinctive zig-zag stripe around the waist.

By the time of the Great Depression, the T-shirt was often the default garment to be worn when doing farm or ranch chores, as well as other times when modesty called for a torso covering but conditions called for lightweight fabrics.

Following World War II it became common to see veterans wearing their uniform trousers with their T-shirts as casual clothing, and they became even more popular after Marlon Brando wore one in Street Car Named Desire, finally achieving status as fashionable, stand-alone, outer-wear garments.[1]
